Generative AI image systems do not create from nothing. They assemble recombinations of existing visual culture—and that changes what we should actually be worried about.
There’s a lot of anxiety around generative AI images right now, especially when it comes to originality and copyright. But if we slow down and look at how these systems actually work, the picture becomes clearer—and a bit less scary.
At its core, generative image-making is a process of reassembly. AI models are trained on massive numbers of images available online. They learn visual relationships—how pixels tend to cluster, how forms repeat, how styles emerge. When prompted, the system predicts an image pixel by pixel based on those learned patterns.
That sounds technical, but conceptually it’s very familiar.

Collage has been part of art history for over a century. Artists have long worked by cutting, layering, sampling, and recombining existing images to create new meaning. The originality was never about inventing raw material from scratch—it was about how things were put together.
Think of artists like Hannah Höch, whose photomontages reshaped mass-media imagery into sharp cultural critique. The power of the work didn’t come from creating new photographs, but from rearranging what already existed.
Generative AI works in a similar way—just at a much larger scale. Instead of scissors and glue, it uses neural networks. Instead of magazines, it draws from billions of digital images. But the underlying logic is the same: recombination, not invention.
Seen through this lens, generative AI images don’t feel like a radical break from art history. They feel like an accelerated, automated continuation of it.
Why this is (mostly) why copyright panic misses the point
This is also why many copyright fears around AI images are overblown.
Collage, sampling, and appropriation have always existed in art. As long as AI systems are not reproducing identifiable works or styles with direct traceability, what they generate is closer to transformative recombination than copying.
That doesn’t mean there are no ethical questions—but it does suggest that copyright alone isn’t the real issue.
The bigger problem is somewhere else.
The real risk: AI learning from itself
Here’s where things get interesting—and concerning.
Generative AI images are primarily used in digital spaces: social media, websites, marketing, platforms. And increasingly, the internet is filling up with images made by AI.
Which means that, over time, AI systems will start training not just on human-made images—but on their own outputs.
We already see hints of this. Most of us can now recognize AI-generated images almost instantly. They have a certain look: polished, repetitive, slightly hollow. Styles blur together. Visual quirks disappear.
This isn’t just an aesthetic preference—it’s a structural problem.
If the “gene pool” of images (or the pool of pixels) becomes dominated by AI-generated content, the diversity of visual input shrinks. Models begin feeding on their own recycled patterns. Instead of improving, image quality risks flattening, converging, and degrading.
In other words: the system becomes creatively inbred.
AI doesn’t run without artists
This leads to a simple but often ignored truth: AI needs artists to survive.
Photographers, painters, designers, illustrators—the people who continuously produce new visual material—are the ones keeping the system alive. They introduce novelty, imperfection, cultural context, lived experience. Without that constant human input, generative systems have nothing meaningful to recombine.
If artists stop uploading work, sharing images, experimenting publicly—whether due to lack of compensation, recognition, or trust—AI doesn’t magically become more creative.
It starves.
AI won’t “run out of pixels,” but it will run out of richness.
Supporting artists isn’t charity—it’s infrastructure
This is why supporting artists is not just an ethical concern; it’s a technical one.
If AI developers, platforms, and institutions want generative systems to remain visually compelling, they need to ensure that human creators can continue creating—and sharing—the work that feeds these models.
Otherwise, the future of AI imagery isn’t innovation. It’s repetition.
Keep the loop open
Generative AI images are best understood as digital collages—assembled, not invented. Once we accept that, we can stop panicking about the wrong things and start focusing on the real risk: a closed feedback loop where machines only learn from themselves.
If we want AI images to get better, not worse, we need to keep humans—and artists in particular—at the center of the visual ecosystem.
Because without them, the collage collapses.
